Tag and Segment Woo and EDD Customers in Ontraport
Now that you have your Automator Pro license or some app credits in your account, let’s take a look at creating our first Automator recipe.
In the recipe pictured above, we’re able to tag our Ontraport contacts based on their Easy Digital Downloads (or WooCommerce, if you prefer) purchases. This is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to segment your audience.
Here’s how we did it.
Step 1: Create a New Recipe
From your WordPress Admin Dashboard, navigate to Automator > Add new recipe. In the popup window that appears, select Logged-in users.
Step 2: Name Your Recipe
Give your recipe a name that makes it easy to recognize at a glance. For example, we have named this recipe “Tag EDD Customers in Ontraport”.
Step 3: Configure Your Trigger(s)
In the Trigger panel, from the menu of available integrations, select Easy Digital Downloads or Woo, depending on your preferred ecommerce platform.
From the dropdown list that appears, select A user purchases a download.
(Note: If you are using Woo, you can select the trigger A user completes, pays for, lands on a thank you page for an order with a product.)
Automator will prompt you to select a download. Once you’re finished, click Save. Your completed trigger should look something like this:
Step 4: Configure Your Action(s)
In the Actions panel, click Add action and select Ontraport.
If you haven’t already connected your Ontraport account, simply click Connect account and follow the instructions. You’ll need your Ontraport App ID and API Key. You can create and locate this information by navigating to Profile > Administration > Integrations > Ontraport API Instructions and Key Manager.
Once you’ve connected your account, return to the recipe editor. From the dropdown list that appears, select Add a tag to a contact.
Automator will prompt you to select a tag and the contact’s email address. To select a tag, simply choose from the list of tags. If you do not see the tag you’re looking for, simply click Refresh options.
In the Email field, we’re going to use a token (i.e., dynamic data pulled from your WordPress website and from within recipes) to identify the contact to tag.
To use tokens, simply click on the Asterisk and select the corresponding token. For example, you will want to select the “User email” token.
Once you’re finished, click Save. Your completed action should look something like this:
Step 5: Go Live!
You’re just about ready to connect Ontraport to WordPress and automate your tagging and segmentation workflows. All that’s left for you to do is toggle the recipe from Draft to Live.
That’s it! You’ve just connected Ontraport to your WordPress ecommerce platform.

Create and Update Ontraport Contacts from WordPress Users
Now that you’ve created your first Ontraport and WordPress integration with Automator, let’s take a look at some more advanced features.
In the recipe pictured above, we’re able to create Ontraport contacts from our WordPress user lists with the click of a button. Even better, with some minor adjustments, we can update dozens, hundreds or even thousands of contacts all at once.
Here’s how it’s done.
Step 1: Create and Name a New Recipe
From your WordPress Admin Dashboard, navigate to Automator > Add new recipe. In the popup window that appears, select Everyone.
Give your recipe a name that makes it easy to recognize at a glance. For example, we have named this recipe “Create Ontraport Contacts from WordPress Users”.
Step 2: Configure Your Trigger(s)
In the Trigger panel, from the menu of available integrations select Run now.
From the dropdown list that appears, select Trigger recipe manually. Your completed trigger should look like this:
Step 3: Configure Your Loop Action(s)
In the Actions panel, click Add and select User loop.
Within the Loop pane, click Add action and select Ontraport.
From the dropdown list that appears, select Create or update a contact.
Automator will present you with a form to fill out your new contacts’ information. Fill out the fields using tokens. For example, in the Email field, we selected the loop token “User email”.
If you have an Automator Pro – Plus or Elite license, you can use Automator’s Custom User Fields Addon to sync our contact’s social media profiles to Ontraport.
Once you’re finished, click Save. Your Loop pane should look like this:
Step 4: Configure Your Loop Filter(s)
As our recipe stands, Automator will add every WordPress user who isn’t an Administrator to our Ontraport CRM. By default, Automator will always add the loop filter “User Criteria: does not have Role: Administrator” to every new User loop.
You can Edit or Delete this filter by clicking the corresponding icons.
For example, we have edited the filter to select only WordPress users with the role “Customer”.
Alternatively or additionally, if you want to add multiple actions to your User loop, you can add a filter to the individual action(s). For example, we have added an individual action filter to only include users with a specific email domain.
Once you’re finished, click Save. Your Loop pane should now look something like this:
Step 5: Run now
Ready to create and update thousands of WordPress users in Ontraport as contacts? All you have to do is click Run now and let Automator handle the busywork.
Now that you’ve gotten the hang of using Automator’s Loops feature, try adding additional Ontraport actions to segment your contacts as you create them.
