WooCommerce WhatsApp Integrations You’ve Always Wanted

If you can point and click, then you can create Automator recipes that seamlessly integrate Woo and WhatsApp.

To get you started, let’s take a close look at a simple recipe you can use now, even with the free version of Automator.

WhatsApp Order Notifications for WooCommerce

Uncanny Automator recipe showing a WooCommerce WhatsApp integration setup where a user receives a WhatsApp message after paying for any Woo product using phone data from the checkout form.

In the recipe pictured above, we’re able to send an order confirmation message to a customer via WhatsApp right after they complete their payment. Using Automator’s tokens feature (i.e., dynamic content from your WordPress website and from within recipes), we included information to personalize the message and summarized the order details.

Here’s how we did it (and how you can to):

Step 1: Create a New Recipe

From your WordPress Admin Dashboard, navigate to Automator > Add new recipe. In the modal that appears, select Logged-in users.

Step 2: Name Your Recipe

Give your recipe a name that makes it easy to recognize at a glance. For example, we’ve named this recipe, “When a user completes, pays for, or lands on a thank you page for a Woo order, send them a WhatsApp message”.

Step 3: Configure Your Trigger(s)

In the Trigger panel, from the menu of available integrations, select Woo.

From the dropdown list that appears, select A user completes, pays for, lands on a thank you page for an order with a product.

Automator action list for Woo, highlighting the action "A user completes, pays for, lands on a thank you page for an order with a product."

Automator will prompt you to select the Trigger condition and the Product. For setting up a recipe to send WhatsApp order confirmation messages, we suggest selecting “pays for” and “Any product” respectively.

Step 4: Configure Your Action(s)

In the Actions panel, click Add action and select WhatsApp.

From the dropdown list that appears, select Send a WhatsApp message to a number or Send a WhatsApp message template to a number.

Dropdown list of Automator actions for WhatsApp; "Send a WhatsApp message to a number" and "Send a WhatsApp message template to a number".

Automator will prompt you to enter the phone number to which the message will be sent as well as the body of the message. We are going to fill these fields out using tokens.

To use a token, click on the Asterisk in a given field and select the corresponding token. For example, in the To field, we have selected the “Billing phone” token from our Woo checkout.

You can use tokens to fill out the draft of your message in the Body field.

Once you’re finished, click Save.

Step 5: Go Live!

You’re just about ready to create your first WooCommerce WhatsApp integration. All you have to do now is toggle the recipe from Draft to Live.

That’s it! You’ve successfully enabled WhatsApp notifications for WooCommerce purchases. However, as we noted at the end of the section “How to Connect WooCommerce to WhatsApp”, your customers have to opt-in to receive WhatsApp messages. This is a process that Automator seeks to make easier.

If you have Automator Pro, you can use action filters to send different messages to your customers, based on whether or not they have opted-in to receive WhatsApp texts. Better yet, with a Pro – Plus license, you can use the Custom User Fields Addon to manage your customers’ opt-in status, save phone numbers, and more.

Note: Messages vs. Message Templates

For users who have already opted in, you can use the action “Send a WhatsApp message to a number”. But, for users who have not yet opted-in, you will need to send a message template with the action “Send a WhatsApp message template to a number” to give them the opportunity to opt-in.

Conditional logic setup in Uncanny Automator for sending WhatsApp messages based on a user's SMS Opt-in status. If the user's meta key "SMS Opt-in" is set to "Yes," a custom WhatsApp message is sent to their WooCommerce billing phone. If the value is "No," a default template message is sent instead.

If you haven’t already, now is a good time to get your Automator Pro license.

WhatsApp Notifications for Woo Order Updates

An informed customer is a happy customer.

Give your Woo shoppers the ability to receive real-time notifications and updates about their orders with WhatsApp messages. Whether it’s an international shipment or a same-day delivery, make sure your customers know where their orders are.

The advantage of Automator is the ability to fully customize and personalize these transactional emails with product recommendations, purchase history, and more.

Track WhatsApp Message Delivery Status

Earlier on, we stressed the importance of opting-in. Well, Automator can help you automate this process as well!

In addition to features such as action filters and conditions, Automator allows you to perform actions on your WordPress website when you receive messages in WhatsApp!

For example, if a WhatsApp message was not delivered successfully to a user, you can trigger an Automator recipe that sends a message to your sales and marketing team in Slack, informing them that a user has missed an important communication.

Send WooCommerce Cart Reminders via WhatsApp

Uncanny Automator recipe demonstrating a WooCommerce WhatsApp integration: when a logged-in user adds any product to their cart but hasn’t purchased it yet, a WhatsApp message is automatically sent to their phone number after a 2-hour delay.

Recover your carts before they become abandoned!

If your customers are anything like me, they probably have a couple dozen tabs open across several windows simultaneously. When they placed that item in their cart, they fully intended to complete the checkout process but got a little sidetracked by the video playing in another window. (Not that I’m speaking from experience, or anything.)

With the recipe pictured above, we’re able to send that customer a gentle reminder with a WhatsApp notification after a few hours.  (Note: Since we need the user’s number to send a WhatsApp message, this will only work for users that are logged into the site and for which you already have a WhatsApp number.)

With Automator Pro, you can create gentle push notifications like this for your customers with ease.
